Do You Dream
Do you dream / do your eyes roll back in the light of a honey-white stream / do sunfish circle the stem of a glassy black rose / when your eyelids are closed / do you race / down the lip of a craggy-faced planet suspended in space / with the overhead light of your home burning distant and faint / like the jewel of a saint / as you lay sleeping and your breathing soft and slowly / you’re almost with me but you’re gone / gone awhile / what are you seeing at my side / do you dream / do you float / do you leave your body and move on the sea like a boat / with the wind in your hair and the slipping sand under your toes / as the tidewater rolls / do you fly / do you stretch out your fingers and climb to the end of the sky / with your feathers in flames and your shadow so far down below / will it always be so / as you lay sleeping and you’re breathing soft and slowly / you’re almost with me but you’re gone / gone awhile / what are you seeing at my side / do you dream.
